Makeup Roll-Up With Zippered Pouch (Projects 5 & 11)

I combined two of my projects and skipped projects 6 through 10 (which I plan to go back and finish). Project 5 was a supplies roll-up. You have probably seen one used to hold paintbrushes - like this. I don't really have a need for something like this cause my supplies' sizes are all over the place. It would be difficult to make a one-size-fits-all roll-up. Regardless, I wanted to complete the project and thought about what I could use it as. Makeup! My brushes, pencils, mascara, etc. are all around the same height. The only thing left would be a place to put my eyeshadow and blush. This is where Project 11 entered the picture. A zippered pencil case would be a perfect case to hold my makeup palettes.

I have been reminded several times that the pink textured vinyl is not very visually appealing. I was aware of this when I purchased it, but was too tired to go through even more rolls of printed vinyl at Mood Fabrics. Plus, it wasn't expensive which was selling point!

I'm pretty sure I won't be using this anytime soon, but it's nice to know that I will have it lying around - just in case =)

Crocheted Infinity Scarf

I have been seeing infinity (or loop) scarves everywhere, so to prepare for winter, I thought I would try making one for myself. To expand my crocheting horizons, I learned how to do a double stitch for the scarf instead of falling back on my usual single stitch. This proved to be beneficial because the yarn I was using is thick - singles stitches are tight and would leave the scarf too stiff. I didn't want to sew up the ends to make the scarf a permanent loop scarf - what if I needed a regular black scarf? To fix this dilemma, I sewed some awesome silver buttons to one end. The double stitch left me with nice big 'holes', perfect for button holes.

I asked one of my coworkers, Ben, to take pictures of me wearing the scarf both ways. I thought I looked small and awkward and ended up taking another set of photos with my other coworker, Paul, as the model. Who wore it better?

Here are some outtakes. Paul's was not posed!

Twine Heart Wedding Card

Jess was attending a wedding over the weekend and enlisted my help to make a card for her. Since I was drawing a blank and pressed for time (I was trying to make a 10pm showing of The Social Network - great movie by the way), I kept it simple and took full advantage of my Martha Stewart Adhesive Ribbon.

For fun, here is an 'action' shot that Jess took while I was busy gluing the yarn heart down.

Letter Coasters (Project 4)

I admit, before this class, I wasn't quite sure what bunting was. According to Wikipedia, modern day usage of bunting is "a term for any festive decorations made of fabric, or of plastic, paper or even cardboard in imitation of fabric. Typical forms of bunting are strings of colorful triangular flags and lengths of fabric in the colors of national flags gathered and draped into swags or pleated into fan shapes."

For Project 4, we were making rounding bunting - a refreshing change from typical triangular bunting. This one was definitely a challenge: 1) cutting out letters - I am terrible with typography, 2) machine sewing rounded edges - I can easily do this by hand but wanted to challenge myself, 3) where in the world was I going to hang this bunting?

I ended up making two wonky almost-circles with my initials... and rather than hang them somewhere, I am using them as coasters. There are other uses for this project's concepts brewing in my mind, but for now, protecting my desk from moisture and heat will have to do.

Reusable Tote (Project 3)

Project 3 has been my favorite project so far. It may be because I treated myself to some gorgeous (and expensive!) fabric from Purl Soho - purchased during a recent trip to New York City. I will definitely be using this bag a lot.
